Yahoo Wants More Popularity With A Bad Idea

I had to do a quick blog post of the new change at Flickr.com, which is their primary logo. I was shocked and disappointed on the logo change.

Flickr.com is the most popular photo website on the planet, everyone knows this. But why add the Yahoo logo to the Flickr logo?

If you’re a member of Flickr.com, you know you have to create a Yahoo.com account, giving Yahoo leverage with ads on their Yahoo Mail service. This simple setup quickly educates users that Flickr is owned by Yahoo. If you ACTUALLY use Yahoo Search for image searches, you’ll notice that their search utilizes the endless library of photos shared by users on Flickr. Flickr is intertwined with Yahoo in so many ways and the sole reason why Yahoo is as popular as they are right now.

Although Flickr is popular, I think it’s a poor strategy to add the Yahoo logo to the Flickr logo. Personally, I feel they added a positive marketing spin to Yahoo.com, but a negative spin to Flickr. Flickr’s success is a great story, but Yahoo’s current business strategy is a negative one.

I request Yahoo to return Flickr back to its “rock status”. Focus on improving the internet experience instead of changing a logo. I challenge you to do better!

It was good to see TechCrunch pick up the story today in their own post, which reinforced the user’s dislike of the new logo. TechCrunch even found a funny new logo to the Flickr logo.
