Multnomah and Wahkeena Falls, Oregon

Wahkeena Falls, Oregon
Just last weekend, I decided to visit my sister in Portland, Oregon, for two reasons. One, so I could see her, since it’s been a few months since my last visit, and two, to buy my new digital camera tax free, the Sony Alpha-900. It was an unexpected surprise when my sister took me to a great place to test out my new camera. Today I will only be talking about my adventure, but I will talk about my new Sony a900 in an upcoming blog entry.

Wahkeena Falls
Our first visit was Wahkeena Falls which is a short walk up the street from the Multnomah Falls. The landscape was amazing and they have numerous trails in the area. If I had my trail gear and didn’t have a train to catch, me and my sister would have checked out the entire area.

Climbing the Creek - Wahkeena Falls
When I take pictures of creeks and waterfalls, I love to follow it, which means no trails. Unfortunately I was wearing new white shoes, so I forged up the creek carefully. In the photo above, I climbed a very large rock to take the shot of the falls and the trail bridge.

I haven’t purchased my wide angle lens yet, so I had a difficult time finding an adequate spot to take photos with my 50mm/f1.4 lens. The Wahkeena Falls near the bridge has a great spray of water too, which is something you have to work around, but on a hot day, it’s a pleasure to do so.
When my sister and I left Wahkeena Falls for Multnomah Falls, I noticed more and more people coming to visit the popular waterfalls. Because of the parking and retail, Multnomah Falls was the most popular destination. With time against me and the crowds being difficult to work around, I only snapped off a few shots.
I did notice one unique difference shooting with my Sony a900 over my old Sony a100, which was my interaction with others. Although the quality of the photos are far superior, I was more impressed with the fact that so many people asked me to trade their camera for mine.
So Sunday was an excellent day. I will have to come back to do this trip again, but I will be better prepared and my schedule wide open. There was a third waterfall I had to skip that was beautiful too, but we didn’t catch the name of it. No worries, the next we visit, I’ll add it to the collection.

Nearly all my photos on my Flickr account are in high resolution. I did this to share my photography, so others could print the original size from Flickr, then print and frame on their wall. The photos taken on my Sony a900 are very large, 12-25MB in size each. So if you like any you see, feel free to do just that.
