Clay Enos - A Master in Portrait Photography

My philosophy is always learn from the best and Clay Enos fits that bill. In a quest to learn as much as I can about studio photography before moving to Salt Lake City, Utah [spring, when I plan to start taking practicing professionally], I came across a video of Clay Enos. The video was a demonstration of doing portraits on the street with people, using a simple backdrop and natural light to take pictures. I loved the presentation, I loved the photography, I loved the idea and I loved the video. So I thought, “who is this guy?” I was quickly drawn to his skill set, so I had to do some quick, easy research.

If you find Clay on Flickr, his photography fits in with the rest of the other Flickr users, where there is a story to every picture [which is a failure on my part with the community], and a deeper story to the same photos on his blog.

At the time I checked out his blog, the photo above was part of a recent article Clay had written on his blog. I loved the photo and started checking out his other links on his blog, where I stumbled across a link for Portraits from the Watchman movie [click on the ad below if you'd like to purchase it]. Happily, I realized why I like Clay’s Wired video. The man has skills. He’s also photographed Kid Rock and Greenday, just to name a few [here's a link to his professional website].

There are two reasons why I am writing this article, and one of them is not to promote Clay Enos, his work has done that already. First, he’s an amazing photographer who loves to share with others interested in his craft. He’s human btw, so teaching and sharing is very rewarding. So if you want to learn different aspects of photography from a portrait master, Clay Enos is someone to follow. Second, which you have to pay attention to if you want to be successful, is his personality. In the video, I was more drawn to his personality than his final photographs [which were amazing too]. You work with people in portrait style photography, so you gotta have an out going personality to work with your clients and models. Even though you must have a great skill set for your craft, you also have to  sell it and entertain your client/models to obtain the end result you’re looking for.

I love Clay’s work and recommend following him. I’ve given you links to everything Clay Enos, so I hope you become a fan too. Below are videos that you must watch. The first one is the Street Studio video, which is where he asks complete strangers to pose for photos. This is a great, free way to promote your work and talent, so the idea is brilliant.
