Cloudy Tacoma, Washington

Glass Museum, Union Station, Bridge and the Tacoma Dome

Although it’s summer right now, you can always rely on Washington weather to be unforgiving, no matter what time of the year it is. With the weather forecast being cloudy and a high chance of rain, I decided to bring my camera to work, so I could take pictures later in the day. I’ll be leaving the Washington area next year, so I wanted to capture the feel of Washington with the weather before I leave.

The trip lasted 3 hours, mostly walking around town which started at the Union Station. From there I walked over to the Glass Museum. I wanted to to wait for nightfall for take pictures of the outdoor glass sculptures after they’re lit up, but I’ll have to wait for another day to do that.

I walked along the water and took touristy pictures for myself until I came across a parked train. I was disappointed that I couldn’t get a good angle, because of the other train and the railing that ran along the street. After a few shots, the driver came out and asked me if I work for a magazine. I joked with him and showed him my low budget camera that I no longer love. In the background of the train picture, you can see a bridge. I found stairs to the bridge, and a perfect photo opportunity.

I immediately saw the shot, but I had to wait for a few people to get off of it before I could take the shot. I took a few from both sides and with different angles, but this one ended up being my favorite. Out of the set of photos taken that day, Flickr users have chosen this one as their favorite.

My favorite shot was the old building I found in the industrial district. I ended up only taking pictures of 3 different buildings, because I was told to get out of the area, and not take pictures, or they would call the cops. I was getting close to the facilities where they pump the fuel into the trucks that fill up the gas stations. The guy tried scaring me off by saying “Homeland is all over the place here, you can’t take pictures”. He had a cellphone in his hand and told me he would call the cops if I didn’t leave. So I went down a different street and took more pictures.
