Simple Artistic Line Effect Tutorial
Above is a photo of President Obama I found online and I was curious as to how the artist created the effect. Playing around in Photoshop this morning before work, I figured how to do it, and wanted to share my little knowledge I have with you.
1.] First, simply load the picture you want to do the effect on in Photoshop. Below is the one I used.
2.] Right Click the the “Background” layer and duplicate the layer, name it “halftone pattern”. This will be the primary layer we will do the effect on. While this layer is selected, click on “Filters”, go down to “Sketch” and select “Halftone Pattern”.
3.] Play around with the settings to achieve what you’re looking for. The settings I chose for this photo is shown below.
4.] To blend the background in with the picture, we have to first select the background. To do this, I used the Polygonal Lasso Tool and traced the background. There is two sides to the background, left and right, so trace one side first. To add the other side to the selection, hold down your shift key[it will show a "+" symbol next to the tool] and trace the other side. Once this is done, both sides should be traced together.
5.] While the lines are still visible that you traced, go back to your layers toolbar, right click the “Background” layer and choose “Duplicate Layer” and name it “Fill”. Click on the “Fill” layer and you will see that the background you traced is still there with the lines, but now the next effect will be done on the “Fill” layer and not the “Halftone” layer.
6.] Make sure you have the color black in your “foreground” box, as shown below. If you do, simply click on “Edit->Fill->Foreground Color->Mode:Normal->Opacity: 100%.
That’s it, you have your final image. Hope this tutorial is useful, it’s my very first one. Let me know what you think.
